On a misty, overcast day, the path to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in Exmoor National Park, stretches before me. The air is heavy with the chill of damp fog, shrouding the landscape in a veil of grey. Visibility is limited; the summit ahead is hidden, lending a sense of mystery to the scene. The path, wide enough for a 4×4 vehicle, is unmistakable yet softened by the fog’s embrace. It cuts through the landscape, bordered on either side by vibrant green grass that appears even richer after the recent rain.
The ground underfoot is waterlogged, a telltale sign of the weather’s persistence. Every step feels connected to the earth, the squelch of boots in the saturated soil adding an auditory element to the visual quiet. The rain has transformed the pathway into a living, textured surface, reflecting light in subtle ways that contrast with the soft tones of the fog.
Dunkery Beacon, though unseen, remains an unspoken destination – a point of focus in a journey defined more by atmosphere than by sight.
